This small wooden panel is typical of Thomas’ oil painting, putting to good use his plentiful cigar box lids. He tried from time to time to give up smoking, but he really enjoyed a smoke with his friends. Much to the dismay of his friend Bernard Barton (1784-1849), who complained of the clouds of smoke which choked him at their meetings.
Provenance: Simon Carter Woodbridge March 1967.
