Verso a scrap of paper with little sketch of woman and child by sea, and note saying ‘to Ellen with Bessie’s love.’ Attributed to Anna Churchyard by Denis Thomas. Anna Churchyard (1832-1897) a very talented artist although rather slapdash at times. She painted in oils and water-colours, and sketched in various mediums as well. She produced a lot of work, although little is found today. Denis Thomas’ book Thomas Churchyard of Woodbridge, published 1966 was the first biographical and critical assessment of Thomas Churchyard. He was helped in his research by Mr Dowsing of St John’s Street, Woodbridge, a collector of many years. Edgar Dowsing had bought drawings, water-colours and oil sketches at the 1927 auction. Provenance: Ex collections Edgar Dowsing and Denis Thomas.
