Second label reads: Thomas Churchyard ‘Rural scene’
At this time Thomas Churchyard’s life was in the balance. He was a young, successful solicitor building his reputation. But having received some encouragement exhibiting in London, he decided to change his career - to be a professional artist. Together with George Rowe, his Woodbridge friend, he sold up his excess possessions, sent his young family to relatives in Melton and moved to London to try his luck. It was a failure, the public were not ready for his talents, so he returned to Woodbridge and restarted his law practice there.
