Fishing by a River or "The Young Waltonians"
A version of John Constable's Stratford Mill
It is thought possible that this is a canvas
which Churchyard bought unfinished and then worked
up. Maybe even from the Constable sale in 1838.
It is certainly an unusual size for Thomas Churchyard.
When Harold Day purchased it in 1960's it had
come from the collection of H.Schemilt. He felt
that the sky was very like Constable and the remainder
more Churchyard. The original stretcher dated
from 1810.
Provenance: Collection of Harold Day ref: T.C.
